Introduction
Thirty-four years ago, the
Chinese government officially began implementing the infamous "one-child
policy" across the entire nation. This draconian policy has led to
massive human rights violations, including forced abortions and
sterilizations, sex-selection abortions, the abandonment and infanticide
of newborn girls, and the victimization of girls and women through
sex-trafficking. One expert has said that this policy has caused "more
violence against women and girls than any other official policy on
earth."
October 11 is the International Day of
the Girl Child. It's a good time to educate yourself and others about
human rights violations that especially impact women and girls not just
in China, but around the world, including the United States. Be sure to
share the articles in this newsletter with others to help them learn
about these issues too!

China:
Time for the One-Child Policy to End
Thirty-four years ago, China
imposed its "one-child policy" across the nation, a policy that has been
blamed for "causing more violence against women and girls than any other
official policy on earth."
The policy requires Chinese couples to have a birth permit before having a
child, with most being allowed only one child. The
enforcement of this policy includes birth quotas, invasive medical
examinations for women, and, for those who get pregnant without permission,
punishments that include exorbitant fines, destruction of homes and
property, arrests, threats to their families and more. For women, it often
means forced abortions and sterilizations. In some cases, women and family
members have been killed or committed suicide.
Steven Mosher of the Population Research Institute, who began exposing the
brutalities of the one-child policy after studying in anthropology in China
in 1979,
recalled seeing seeing "young women who were pregnant with 'illegal'
children being incarcerated to await the abortions of their late-term
pregnancies," and "viable infants forcefully removed from inside their
mother’s bodies while their mothers wept."

New Study Exposes the Link Between Sex Trafficking and Forced Abortion
A new U.S. study of women who survived sex trafficking found that forced
abortion was common among victims who became pregnant, calling it an
“especially disturbing trend.”
Laura Lederer, one the authors of the study, testified about the
findings at a congressional hearing on on sex trafficking and health
care on Sept. 11.
The paper, published in the
Annals of Health Law, was based on surveys of 66 women who had been
trafficked for sex in the U.S. Fifty-five percent of the respondents
reported undergoing at least one abortion while they were being
trafficked, and 30 percent reported multiple abortions.
