Grand Jury's "See No Evil" Report an Opportunity
to Expose Other Regulatory Negligence
Exploitation Disguised as Healthcare Gets a Pass Elsewhere, Too
Nightmarish news about West Philadelphia abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell reveals an equally disturbing pattern of employees, state workers and health officials willing to look the other way. Gosnell faces gruesome charges, including killing infants with scissors, exploiting poverty-stricken women, spreading disease with filthy instruments, implication in women's deaths, and more.
In a section called "See No Evil," the Grand Jury reported that the state Health Department and the Pennsylvania Department of State, responsible for physician oversight, were aware of health violations over the years, yet the Health Department ultimately chose to stop inspecting abortion clinics altogether. Jurors were disturbed by what they called "bureaucratic inertia." Others called it a "complete regulatory collapse."
Most people in the general public assume that abortion clinics are held to the same standards as other facilities, such as outpatient surgery clinics, but unsafe and even abusive conditions prevail in clinics across the nation.
Leading abortion advocacy groups that champion abortion rights under the thin veneers of 'choice' and 'safe' healthcare -- have responded by painting such abuses as rare. However, substandard medical practices, including deceptive, coercive or exploitative and agenda- or profit-conflicted counseling are common.
This is a good time to educate the public. Unlike those in this story who chose to look the other way, we can spotlight the abortion industry's substandard medicine, exploitation and dangers in lieu of the authentic support for both babies and mothers.
